LANDSCAPING

The Landscape Committee plans and installs landscaping on public property in West Towson, and encourages homeowners to plant trees on their private property as well. For example, many of the trees in the West Towson Neighborhood Park and around the Bykota Center were planted by the committee. We also maintain the flowers under the West Towson sign in the Park. Newcomers are welcome to join the committee, and you don't have to be a Board member to join. The Chair is Louise Teubner-Rhodes, and she is always willing to serve as a resource for landscaping information.

This spring we installed new trees around the new playground equipment in the park. You, the residents of West Towson, made these plantings possible with your generous donations - thank you. Just one of the trees failed to make it and will be replaced later this fall.

Plant Pointers
Topless in West Towson? We hope not! When the size of a tree needs to be reduced, the pruning technique of "thinning" is much healthier for a tree than the practice of "topping" it. When a tree is thinned, each branch that is removed is taken back to its origin on a larger branch. It is cut right outside the branch collar, the thickened area where the branch attaches. This promotes the fastest healing of the wound. It also preserves the shape and natural beauty of the tree.

Topping, on the other hand, just cuts the branch straight across, and promotes rot and insect damage. It is also counterproductive, because many trees will produce multiple weak shoots when topped. So thin your trees when necessary, don't top them, and they will reward you with healthy growth. Louise Teubner-Rhodes
